Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.
We present a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical physical horror, but inside Together lies a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.
A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics
Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The plot commences when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.
Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.
Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that arise in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and fully committing to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.
A Controversial Conclusion
Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.
Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
