At least 13 passengers perish and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were built at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
